Building Your Own Pegan Recipe Book

pegan recipe bookIf you have just started on pegan diet and would like a more customized compilation of recipes, you can build your own pegan recipe book. Pegan diet is a combination of some of the principles in Paleo diet and Veganism. “Pegan” is “Paleo” and “vegan” joined together to offer another healthy diet option.

Although online bookstores now offer cookbooks specifically for pegan diet, you may want to have one that is specific to the type of dish you truly love. If those dishes are not pegan yet, then go ahead and “peganize” your existing recipes. But if you are starting with zero recipes, then surf the net for ones that appeal to you.

Let’s start creating your personal pegan recipe book.

Build a list and search for recipes

building-a-listTo make meal preparations much easier, list down the following:

  • What you always have – these could be anything from garlic to olive oil, or homegrown vegetables.
  • What you can easily buy – these are items that when a recipe requires them, you can simply go to the nearest store and buy them.

The last thing you want is to resort to canned goods just because you are having a hard time looking for a recipe that doesn’t call for ingredients that you have to pick up from another town.

Once you have your lists, hit the net. Today, there are several recipe generator websites, which are very helpful when you want to cook something but you’re limited by what you have in your pantry. In these websites, you simply tick on the items that you have (or can easily buy) and wait for it to give you a list of recipes that you can use for your pegan recipe book.

From the list provided by the recipe generator website, gather the ones that you would like to include in your pegan recipe book. Be sure to have a variety of dishes. Have some for each meal of the day and include some snacks, as well. Feel free to add any existing recipes that you already have.

Double-check the ingredients and substitute as needed

When you have all your recipes, it’s time to go through the ingredients and look at the whole dish to make sure it meets the requirements of a pegan diet:

  • It is a low GI (Glycemic Index) food.
  • It is mostly fruit and/or vegetable.
  • It is NOT dairy or dairy product.
  • It is NOT gluten.
  • It is all natural, without any additives or preservative.
  • The meat is organic and the portion is small.
  • It is low in sugar or has NO sugar.
  • It is good fats. (ex. coconut oil, omega-3 fats, fat from grass-fed animals)

Substitute non-pegan items for something that will make your recipe much healthier. For instance, if the recipe calls for butter, which is a dairy product, use coconut oil or olive oil instead. Review the portions, too. In pegan diet, fruits and vegetables should make up 75 percent of the meal and meat must be the portion of a side dish.

Compile your new recipes

You are now ready to compile your recipes for your pegan recipe book. Categorize them according to what makes more sense to you. It is also up to you if you want them in digital format or if you prefer a print out.
